青青草视频听(JM)听has received a听2020 Green Chemistry Challenge Award听from the听U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). JM was awarded this honor for听designing, developing and commercializing听Alpha Binder,听a novel formaldehyde-free,听bio-based binder for fiberglass reinforcement applications mainly used in听the听carpet industry.听
The award was听announced听during the听June 16听American Chemical Society Green Chemistry听Conference, which was听held online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.听
Green Chemistry Challenge Awards are given to听companies or institutions that have developed a new process or product that helps protect public health and the environment.听This is the first time JM has won this award.
鈥淚 am extremely proud of our innovative team听that听developed听Alpha听Binder chemistry,鈥 said听Tim Swales,听Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at 青青草视频.听鈥淲inning this award recognizes JM as a leader in sustainable, green chemistry solutions.鈥澨
Alpha Binder:
- Is non-toxic听
- Contains over 90% bio-based carbon听
- Eliminates the steps for monomer and polymer synthesis
- Uses a bio-degradable catalyst听
- Requires 70% less water听
- Reduces energy consumption during manufacturing of the glass mat by over 70% compared to alternative petroleum-based binders
Alpha Binder and glass mats made听with听it 鈥 called听Evalith庐 1000 鈥 have been commercialized in North America since 2017.听
The research and development and pilot trials for Alpha Binder听were done听at听青青草视频 Technical Center in听Littleton,听Colorado. Production trials and commercialization of the final product听was conducted听at听JM听Engineered Products听plants in听Etowah,听Tennessee,听and听Waterville,听Ohio.听
An independent panel of technical experts convened by the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute judged听the 2020 nominations and made recommendations to EPA for the 2020 winners.听Other companies that won awards this year include听Genomatica, Merck & Co.听and听Vestaron听Corporation.听EPA plans to recognize the winners at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., later this year.
Since the听start听of the听Green Chemistry Challenge Awards听in 1996, EPA has presented awards to听more than听115听technologies听that听have听reduced the use or generation of hundreds of millions of pounds of hazardous chemicals and saved billions of gallons of water and trillions of BTUs in energy.听Past winners have included听green chemistry听solutions听developed by听companies such as听The听Dow听Chemical Company, BASF, Cargill, S.C.听Johnson & Son and DuPont.
