JMers Honor the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For members of embRACE (the JM Diversity & Inclusion听Employee Resource Group focused on general race and culture), Martin Luther听King, Jr. Day was one of celebration, an opportunity to give thanks and a time听to express their dedication to ensuring that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.鈥檚 dream听of equality for all becomes reality.

Members of the embRACE group walked in听the Dr.听Martin听Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission鈥檚听鈥淢arade鈥 on January听17.听The annual Marade is the only event of its听kind in the听nation, bringing听together as many as 90,000 people to
celebrate the life听and impact of human听rights activist Dr. Martin听Luther King, Jr. The first听Marade in Denver took听place in 1986.
Today, it includes events such as a听wreath laying, a march/parade, and听more.听You can learn more听about the event .

On January 14th, a Business听Awards luncheon is held by the Commission to recognize individuals,听corporations and non-profit organizations for Celebrating Content of听Character. JM Account Specialist Dominique Davis has been volunteering for听this event alongside her mother (Deborah Kulas, Chief Reservationist) in the听past and听presented this event to the group for JM to participate听in.听鈥淲e purchased a table for the MLK Business Awards Luncheon听this听year! I thought the luncheon would be something really great for JM听to听participate in. I have been volunteering on the day of the event for听the past听three years now and that is how I was able to get JM involved. It听is an听incredible event and a wonderful way to honor a man who was a
trailblazer for听people like myself,鈥 Dominique said. You can learn more听about the luncheon .

In addition to these events, Dominique Davis and Steve Kondracki, HR Manager for Roofing Systems,听invited a former federal prosecutor to have a conversation about race at our听JMTC location in Littleton, CO. Jason St. Julien, now听Lead Counsel of Community Trust for Airbnb, spoke with听20 JMers about transforming conversations about race as a tool to drive change听and improve diversity and inclusion at work and in the community.

鈥(Jason) is a fearless leader听and an individual who continues to have the tough conversations on race that听not everyone in his power is made to have, and I think that is very important,鈥澨鼶ominique said.

Jason addressed the group by saying,听鈥淲hat听better way to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. than to be able to have a听conversation such as this? I鈥檓 committed to facilitating this conversation in听such a way that you and everyone else in here have some new thought, view,听perspective or action to take, as it relates to race, that you did not have听when you walked in here this morning.鈥

St. Julien, who听penned听a听 in听2020 in the wake of George Floyd鈥檚 murder, provided the group with tips on how听to talk about race, particularly in the workplace 鈥 encouraging people to听listen with intent to understand, rather than to respond and to focus on听connecting as humans.听

He further urged attendees to听continue to have such crucial conversations in their communities and homes,听adding, 鈥淚鈥檇 rather you blow it then to sit back and let your silence be seen听as agreement.鈥

鈥淧eople shared their own听experiences with race-related fears, concerns and life experiences, and we left听with a call to action,鈥 noted Kondracki.听鈥淲e hope that this is a catalyst听and that we鈥檒l have more conversations and action items in the near future,鈥 he听added.
