Air filtration has always beenÌýdefinedÌýbyÌýcoreÌýperformance:ÌýparticleÌýefficiency, pressure drop,ÌýandÌýlifetime. But in recent years,ÌýanotherÌýquestion has become just as importantÌýand critical:ÌýHow safe are the materials inside the filter itself?Ìý
Manufacturers, OEMs, andÌýsystemÌýoperatorsÌýwant clearÌýscience-basedÌýanswersÌý-Ìýespecially when fine fibers are involved.Ìý
This is exactly whereÌýbiosolubleÌýmicro fiberglassÌýmakes a difference. Biosolubility describes how specific glass chemistries dissolve naturally in theÌýbodyÌýifÌývery fineÌýfibers are inhaled. In other words: the glass is engineered to beÌýsafe by chemistry, not by chance.Ìý
And when this safety foundation meets the stable,Ìýhigh efficiencyÌýperformanceÌýmicro fiberglassÌýis known for, you reach what we at ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ call theÌýSweet Spot ofÌýMicroÌýFiberglass.Ìý
It’s the point whereÌýÌýexceptionalÌýhealth protection and filtration performance come togetherÌý-Ìýand JM hasÌýbeenÌýbuildingÌýitsÌýmicro fiberglassÌýportfolio precisely in this space for more thanÌý30Ìýyears.Ìý

Ìý
What Biosolubility Really MeansÌý-Ìýand Why It MattersÌý
To understand why biosoluble glass playsÌýsuch an important role today, it helps to look atthe fundamentals.ÌýÌý
Very fine fibers can becomeÌýrespirable depending on their diameter, length, and aspect ratio.ÌýAccording to the World Health Organization definition, respirable fibers areÌýthose smaller than 3 µm in diameter, longer than 5 µm, and with a length‑to‑diameterÌýratio of at least 3:1. If these fibers are made from a glass chemistry thatÌýis not biosoluble, they may persist in the lungs where they can causeÌýinflammation, which can lead to other health issues. That’s why the EU’s CLP Regulation and the U.S. OSHA Hazard Communication Standard require manufacturers to either demonstrate,Ìýthrough established scientific testing, that their specific chemistryÌýis biosoluble or to label products containing those fibers as aÌýpotential carcinogen.Ìý

Ìý
This is where Note Q toÌýthe CLP Regulation becomes essential. It definesÌýrecognized scientific test methods - including short-term inhalation,Ìýintratracheal instillation, or long-term studies - thatÌýcan confirm a chemistry is biosoluble. IfÌýnot, the CLP Regulation requires a warning label to be applied to any productÌýcontaining fibers that have not passed Note Q testing, if those fibers arepresent above 0.1 weight percent.ÌýThe U.S. OSHA Hazard Communication Standard includes similar requirements for hazard classification and communication.
ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ long ago performed thisÌýtesting for the glass chemistries used in our microfiber glass filterÌýmedia and met the Note Q criteria, in alignment with applicable requirements under the U.S. OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. We keep the chemistry consistent to ensure theÌýfibers in our filter media remain biosoluble.Ìý

The link between glass chemistry and biosolubility is well established. We’ve built our entire approach on that science – not assumptions.
Christian Hassmann
Business Director, Filtration & Separation
Ìý
For customers, this means clarity: the glass chemistry used in JM’sÌýEvalith® micro fiberglassÌýmedia is scientifically proven to be biosoluble.Ìý
Ìý
Safety and PerformanceÌý-ÌýBoth Essential, Both Non-negotiableÌý
Once safety isÌýclear, the next question isÌýstraightforward:ÌýHow does the material perform?Ìý
Because in filtration, performance isÌýneverÌýoptional.Ìý
This combination of safe chemistry and reliable performance is the essence of theÌýSweet SpotÌý-ÌýaÌýcarefully engineeredÌýbalanceÌýofÌýtwo equally important requirements.

Ìý
Why Micro Fiberglass Delivers the Performance Filtration NeedsÌý
Micro fiberglassÌýmediaÌýisÌýuniquelyÌýsuited for high-efficiencyÌýmechanicalÌýfiltrationÌýthanks to:Ìý
- High efficiency at low pressureÌýdropÌý
- Mechanical performanceÌýindependentÌýofÌýelectrostatic chargeÌý
- Stable efficiency throughout the entire filterÌýlifetimeÌý
- ReliableÌýperformance in demanding environmentsÌý
- EffectiveÌýcapture of fine and submicron particlesÌý

The key is stability. With micro fiberglass, the performance you measure on day one is the performance you see later on. That consistency matters to our customers.
Roger Eckrich
Commercial Leader Europe and Asia, Filtration & Separation
Ìý
This stability isÌýincreasinglyÌýcritical in modern applications like industrial HVAC, cleanroomsÌý-ÌýandÌýespecially AI data centers, whereÌýeven minorÌýdeclinesÌýin filtrationÌýperformanceÌýcan directlyÌýimpactÌýoperations.Ìý
How Today’sÌýJMÌýEvalith® MicroÌýFiberglassÌýMedia Behaves in PracticeÌý
Discussions about fiber behavior, includingÌýshedding, still appear in some corners of the market - often basedÌýon impressions from decades ago. JohnsÌýManville’s Evalith® micro fiberglass media today is the result of continuous improvement and strict process control.Ìý
Today’s JM micro fiberglassÌýmedia features:Ìý
- A stabilizingÌýbacking veilÌýon the downstream sideÌý

What matters is selecting the right material for the right environmentÌý-Ìýand for highÌýefficiency mechanical filtration,Ìýlow energy consumption during use, and high dust holding capacity for a long filter lifetimeÌýJM’sÌýEvalith® micro fiberglassÌýmediaÌýremainsÌýthe benchmark.Ìý

Ìý
The Importance of Verifying Biosolubility ClaimsÌý
Around the world, filtration manufacturersÌýmay encounter glass media that looks similar to established JM Evalith®Ìýmicro fiberglass but lacks clarity on biosolubility. Does yourÌýsupplier have documentation showing its fiber chemistry has passed Note Q testing?
Not knowing this can create serious risks,Ìýnot only under CLP, but also for employees, customers, and end users.Ìý

Clarity and transparency are essential. Customers need to know exactly what they are working with – and what it means for their teams and their customers.
